About the Movement
The Sudan People's Liberation Movement was founded in 1983 under the leadership of Dr. John Garang de Mabior. Its first Manifesto, published in July 1983, set out the Vision of a New Sudan built on liberation, freedom, equality, democracy and justice.
After more than two decades of struggle, the Comprehensive Peace Agreement was signed in January 2005. Following the passing of Dr. Garang in July 2005, Salva Kiir Mayardit became Chairman of the Movement.
In May 2008 the Second National Convention adopted the SPLM Constitution, transforming the Movement into a national political party. On 9 July 2011 the Republic of South Sudan became independent, with the SPLM as its ruling party.
